Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument

People inhabited this area for 1000 years or more.

Old West

The Mogollon people first moved to what is now the Gila National Forest in southwestern New Mexico around 500 AD. In the rough and desolate country near the west fork of the Gila River, they first built pit houses and then in approximately 1000 AD they began building surface homes.
