Oregon is a state known for interesting geological formations, much of its landscape carved by the volcanoes and torrents of rain so much associated with the Pacific Northwest. Stein’s Pillar, in the Ochoco National Forest, is what’s left of the heart of one of those volcanoes after many years of erosion.

That radical step has preserved miles of windswept headlands, sweeping views, massive offshore rocks and rolling dunes that are accessible to everyone. Motel owners and private residents have challenged the law multiple times since, but recreational easement rights remain.
