If you're planning on taking one of the most incredible hikes in the West, you need permission. Permits to climb Half Dome in Yosemite National Park are now required seven days a week.
That's because, when permits weren't required, an average of over 800 visitors a day used the cables, with the number climbing to 1200 during peak use. Crowded conditions generated significant safety concerns, and there were several serious injuries as well as several fatalities.
