High Dune and Mount Herard

Trails - Hike - Colorado

A National Park Without Limits

Camp and hike anywhere; wilderness is everywhere.

Trails

Great Sand Dunes National Park in southern Colorado is truly a unique experience. These thirty square miles of dunes, the tallest in North America, have no designated trails. Everything is open to exploration.

The same philosophy applies to camping. Although there are traditional campgrounds, camping within the dunes is permitted anywhere outside the day-use area. A permit is required, as are a good pair of hiking legs in order to literally wade through sand for 1 ½ miles. Maybe you will discover some of the strange creatures that local legend says inhabit the inner reaches of the park, or find one of the lost wagon trains that supposedly vanished among the dunes. Even if you don’t, where else will you find stars so brilliant and the howl of the coyote so piercing?

The sand dunes are nestled at the foot of the 13,000-plus foot Sangre de Cristo Mountains, making for a study in contrasts and a myriad of outdoors experiences. In fact, the mountain preserve that surrounds the dunes is 65-square miles.

The large dune closest to the parking lot is High Dune, 650 feet high. Just beyond it is spectacular Star Dune, the highest dune in Nort...[continued]

Traffic Jam on Half Dome

Overcrowding causes serious safety concerns.

Trails

If you're planning on taking one of the most incredible hikes in the West, you need permission. Permits to climb Half Dome in Yosemite National Park are now required seven days a week.

That's because, when permits weren't required, an average of over 800 visitors a day used the cables, with the number climbing to 1200 during peak use. Crowded conditions generated significant safety concerns, and there were several serious injuries as well as several fatalities.

Half Dome is certainly an epic, "I did it!" hike, but most hikers don't understand exactly how strenuous it is. Thus, the  permit system. To get to the incredible views at the summit, it's 17 miles round trip and a 4800 foot elevation gain. Once you arrive at the cables it takes two hands, two feet, and a lot of strength to haul yourself up nearly 440 feet of vertical granite.

Applications for permits are available from March 1 thru March 31. They are  allocated via a preseason lottery, a two-day in advance lottery, and as part of the Wilderness Permit Process. Reservations can be made through www.r...[continued]
